The Future of Civil War History -- March 14-16, 2013
This conference presents the opportunity to network, learn, and discuss some of the unique challenges one faces when interpreting the African American perspective in the American Civil War. Speakers and panelists are from universities and museums from across the country. There are several sessions that focus on what the USCTLHA hopes to accomplish (including "Building a dialogue among Museum Professionals, Academics, and Civil War Re-enactors"). Also, there is a session on "Slavery and Contraband History at Civil War Sites." This should be an interesting session based on the conference's goals and objectives. For example, all too often northern sites want contraband portrayal (which often isn't historically accurate), and southern sites want the contraband camp comingled with the rest of the civilians (which also isn't historically accurate).
